Measuring tips

Take your actual body measurements as they are more accurate than measuring over your clothes or shoes.

Collar: measure around the base of the neck where the collar sits.

Chest: measure the chest at the fullest part, placing the tape close up under the arms.

Waist: measure the natural waistline.

Jacket Length: measure from the centre back of your neck to your hemline. Then length measurement will vary depending on the style.

I picked the large size so that I could wear a fleece underneath - I would normally wear medium. This was the perfect size for me. The material is lighter weight than I expected but I’m happy with it. There’s good protection in front of the neck and in the front of the hood. The internal zip pocket is large enough for a map. No frills but pleased with my purchase.

Bought a Berghaus Goretex jacket for under £100. I'm very pleased with it. I remember when Goretex came out in the 1980s and I never thought I'd be able to afford it. It's a replacement for an Endura cycle / hike jacket which is over 15 yrs old and refused to be re-proofed.I'm a slim 38" chest and bought a medium. It's a great fit. It's a nice basic, unfussy jacket. Water beads off it beautifully and it's reasonably breathable. It works best in chilly weather and when not carrying stuff on your back. I've done some good walks in it and have also cycled to work in it. I'm looking forward to testing it proper over the winter. I can see it's going to be my main jacket from now onThe hood gives great protection and I'm grateful that it's not one of those stupid ones which goes to a point at the back. It would be slightly better if it was removable or folded into the collar but I don't mind too much.I have a pair of Berghaus overtrousers too and they're great. I strongly recommend Berghaus kit for functionality. The assistant at the Birkenhead branch let me try on a jacket for size before I bought the one I wanted online. Thanks Millets.

Jacket not tested in anger yet but looks like it is just what is required for my daily local walks in South Snowdonia

Great jacket

This is a great, fully waterproof and fully windproof jacket. It has kept me bone dry in horrendous rain and when coupled with an effective mid-layer also keeps me warm. The hand-warmer pockets are deeper and have larger zip openings than on most jackets which is ideal as it prevents the hip belt of a rucksack (or climbing harness etc) from making the pockets inaccessible. The inside chest pocket is also much deeper than on most jackets and can comfortably hold an OS map with room for other valuables.
