Take a look at our Tent Buying Guide for tips and info on how to find out which tent is for you.
What is the history of tenting?
Tents were discovered almost 40,000 years ago, with the remains of archaic tents found to be made up of woolly mammoth hide and bones. Tents that resembled the modern kind first appeared around the Iron Age – treated with animal fats and oils to add waterproofing and weatherproofing properties. The start of the 20th century dawned the true recreational tenting era, the wooden support poles previously prevalent were replaced by metal and plastic and as we moved into the current 21st, nylon and polyester took precedence mainly due to their outstanding lightweight properties that allowed for total convenience for avid campers.
How long do tents last before needing to be replaced?
This answer is dependent on how much use you put into your tent, but modern tents are extremely durable and made to last for many years. If looked after with sufficient care, tents can last for a minimum of 5 years up to the decade mark. Signs a tent needs replacing include holes, burn marks, and sagging when pitched correctly. There are certain practices you want to avoid such as storing your tent while wet (a few hours are okay) as it can be detrimental to the life cycle of your product and can lead to mould gathering at the seams.
What innovations and technological advancements have been made in the industry?
The tenting industry is continuously evolving, looking to push the boundaries to make camping more comfortable. In recent times, blackout technology has been developed which allows for the best sleeping experience and reduces the risk of being woken by the glare of the sun when you want a lie in or need a mid-day nap. Air beam construction has also become increasingly popular within the field as it allows for enhanced convenience and makes the camping experience much easier pitching and packing away.
What tent do I need for my camping trip?
Tents come in various sizes and types, suitable for an array of different kinds of camping trips. There are numerous factors to consider when purchasing a tent, including how much space you’re going to need, how much storage space and equipment you have with you, whether you need separate compartments and much more.
