The Benefits of Taking your Children Outdoors with Julia Bradbury

“Children who don’t connect with nature before the age of 12 are less likely to as adults.”

Taking your children outside, especially from an early age, has proven to have positive benefits on their mental health and in whole, their connection with nature. We caught up with Julia Bradbury in one of her favourite places, the Chilterns, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to discuss childhood, mental health and our human connection with nature.

Recent Studies

Recent studies have revealed the benefit of spending time outdoors, for people of all ages. Some have even said that just a picture of greenery can positively impact people’s mental health – although we would recommend the real outdoors for the true benefit.

On our last venture with our Peter Storm ambassador Julia Bradbury, we talked about the benefits of getting your kids out walking, camping and anything involving greenery. As well as her own kids, Julia spoke about the memories of walking with her own dad when she was young, and the advantages she felt from that.

“These days I get to take my own little ones with me, and that’s a real joy. I’ve noticed how it positively impacts them, both physically and mentally. It helps them get a better night’s sleep and they really do learn how to interact with other without screens”.

Getting your Kids Out There

Getting my children interested in the outdoors has been quite easy. My son Zephyr was out in a papoose up in the highlands when he was just 3 months old. Even if the kids are just playing in the garden, we make sure they get their green time every day”.

Even if just for an afternoon or an hour after school, getting your kids outside has proven to help them in many aspects of life.

As Julia told us, “Studies show that children who have regular outdoor playtime are more independent, more resilient and it’s great for their mental health too”.

Made for Adventure

We have to agree, Julia, what’s not to love? And getting in the outdoors has never been easier. With our made for adventure campaign, you can find a local adventure in most areas of the UK. From walks in the park to more challenging hikes, all of the information is over on our blog to get you and your family going.

Be Prepared

As well as looking after your mental health, it’s important to keep yourself protected from the elements of the outdoors.

Julia advised: “Stay safe and protected in mother nature. A reliable waterproof jacket and a good pair of hiking boots should have you covered. I’ve been loving the peter storm downpour waterproof jacket which is 100% waterproof breathable, size inclusive and affordable”.
