Essentials for You and Your Pooch

Millets Takes the Lead

Dogs love walkies. Dogs need walkies. And that means, come rain or shine, you and your beloved pooch have to get outdoors regularly. Whether its early morning, late evening or weekend strolls, its essential that you and your dog have the right gear for the conditions when out walking. Here we cover the essentials you should take next time you and your pooch venture outdoors.

Let's start with you...

Baselayers

Heading into the chillier seasons, you’re going to become more susceptible to the cold. Layering is the best way to combat the chill and this starts with a good baselayer. Perfect for early morning and late night walks, thermal baselayer tops and bottoms lock in heat and breathe well to maximise comfort. Check out our great value baselayer sets from Peter Storm.

Footwear

Clocking up the miles in local parks, across fields, around town and down muddy tracks will take its toll on your feet. That’s why we recommend you invest in a quality pair of walking shoes which suit your route. If you’re an urban explorer who stomps the pavements with your pooch daily then consider a low walking shoe with flat cleats on the sole and cushioning underfoot: something like the Hi-Tec Wild-Life, Merrell Locksley or Brasher Country Classic.

Going off-road? Then you’ll need a deep sole, waterproof protection and a more durable, stable structure. Consider the Hi-Tec Ox Discovery, the iconic Merrell Moab, shoes from Oboz (a new brand for us), and our exclusive Brasher footwear collection.

When temperatures drop further and snow/ice appears, stride out confidently on pavement or grass in cosy, fully protected snow boots. Combining urban style with outdoor performance, snow boots will keep your feet warm, dry and supported.

Waterproofs

Dressing right for rain makes stepping out of your door that little bit easier. When the heavens open, be prepared for classic British weather and stay dry with a waterproof jacket. Our collection includes super-stylish parkas, technical shells and great value everyday jackets that will keep the rain at bay. Choose something with lots of pockets for doggy treats, waste bags and other essentials. The Peter Storm Techlite II, The North Face Resolve, and Regatta Calderdale II are all great options.

Want to inject warmth into your outfit; consider a 3 in 1 jacket which combines a waterproof outer jacket with a cosy fleece inner to keep you warm and dry on your walk.

Accessories

Often, we forget the small things. Gloves, hats and socks are all essentials that will protect you from cold, wind and rain. No matter the length of your walk, a good pair of gloves or a cosy beanie will ensure that you stay comfortable outdoors.

What about Pooch?

Dogs love to explore outdoors. There are a few things that you will need for them however to make sure that they enjoy walkies to the full.

1) Treats (going on a longer walk, take food too and a collapsible bowl to feed them in)

2) Poo bags (unglamorous but essential, make sure you take more than you think you’ll need, just in case)

3) Lead or harness (harnesses are a more comfortable and secure way to keep you dog under control)

4) Water (active dogs need to stay hydrated and so do you. Collapsible bowls can also be used for water, while you should take a bottle or hydration pack for yourself)

5) Jackets (doggy jackets are available that offer warmth, weather protection and even greater visibility)
