Britain’s Top Stargazing Spots

Being outside isn’t just what’s around you, it’s also what’s above you. Big open skies are a defining feature of the outdoors, especially on a clear night. We’ve all seen the pictures online that look like a scene from a sci-fi film, but not all of us know how to see these majestic sights in person. At Millets, we’re here to tell you just how easy it is to partake in the magical pastime of stargazing! There are hundreds of hotspots in the UK alone to look up in wonder. Take a look at our top five suggestions.

Before You Go

What time would be best to go stargazing? At night, obviously, so it’s going to be cold. Wrap up warm with a nice insulated jacket so you can explore the skies whilst keeping snug. Most great stargazing spots are also often out in the countryside to avoid light pollution, so we recommend wearing a good pair of walking shoes or walking boots to help you get to the best spots. Alternatively, why not turn your interstellar sightseeing adventure into a camping trip and spend a night under the stars? We have a wide range of tents and sleeping bags to give you the best nights kip for watching the cosmos.

Permbrokeshire, Wales

Pembrokeshire is home to quite a few Dark Sky Discovery Sites, perfect for spending an evening under the stars. You can find many of them on the coast, so you can hear the waves crashing against the shore as you stare up towards the final frontier. The lack of light pollution along the coast means that in the right conditions, you may just be able to see the Milky Way galaxy. One of our favourite Dark Sky Discovery Sites in Pembrokeshire is BroadHaven South car park, a cliff-top site at the heart of the national park that offers a 360-degree panorama view of the night sky. Events are also occasionally held here to make your trip extra special.

Exmoor National Park, North Devon

Another spot with Dark Sky recognition, this stargazing spot is perfect for anyone in the south who’s looking at seeing some breath-taking sights. With local authorities working to manage the light pollution, this spot is very popular with astronomers, don’t worry though, on clear nights, many spectacular wonders are visible with the naked eye! Exmoor National Park also has several National Park Centres in the area where you can hire equipment such as telescopes, for the ultimate stargazing experience..

Norfolk Coast, Norfolk

Treat yourself with the stunning view of the stars. Being along the coast, far away from light pollution, brings the stars out like you’ve never seen them before. With easy access, multiple beaches and the stunning back drop of the North Sea to illuminate the night sky, the Norfolk Coast is a prime stargazing hotspot.

Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park, Scotland

Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park was the first Dark Sky Park in Britain and is one of only three in Europe. If you want a true star gazing experience, this is the place to go. Although there’s plenty to see with the naked eye, this park has an observatory, so you can see wonders such as the North Star, Cassiopeia and the Plough in amazing detail. Perfect for star-seeking enthusiasts.

Kielder Water & Forest Park, Northumberland

Where better to see the night sky than the darkest place in England? Recognised as the darkest by the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, the dense skies cover Kielder Water and Forest Park, Kielder Observatory and Northumberland National Park. The International Dark Skies Association awarded this location as one of only six ‘Dark Sky Status’ areas, making it a top spot for amateur astronomers. With 250 square miles of beautiful woodland and the previously mentioned Kielder Observatory amongst it, this really is the perfect place to stray away from the smog of the city and gaze up at the stars above. Unless you live locally, you’re going to want to spend the night here to get the full experience the universe has to offer.

Dark Sky Discovery

There are so many brilliant stargazing hotspots spread out across the UK, probably not that far away from you. Find your nearest stargazing spot with Dark Sky Discovery and take your love and wonder for the outdoors upwards to the stars.

Check out the camping equipment we have available on our site to start prepping your evening under the stars. And don’t forget to look through our extensive range of men’s insulated jackets and women’s insulated jackets to keep you warm and cosy whilst watching the worlds up above.
