ALAN MILLETT
FOUNDER OF MILLETT’S LEISURE GROUP
On Saturday 12 November Alan Millett, Chairman and founder of the Millett’s Leisure group, passed away at the age of 88.
Alan was a well-known character in the retail world, and he played a pivotal role in making Millets the household name it is today. Alan had the vision of bringing together all the diverse groups of Millets shops, and in 1984 he listed them on the London stock exchange as Milletts Leisure Group. Although he did not succeed in buying up every shop, he lived to see the JD Sports Fashion group achieve what he had dreamt of.
From his first shop in Richmond, to seeing his name on every High Street, Alan met and knew well all of his managers and many of his 1200 staff. He combined a huge energy for charitable work raising substantial sums for a multitude of causes, with a magnetic personality attracting a circle of ‘who’s who’ of business acquaintances of the great and good in his time.
Our thoughts go out to those he has left behind, and on behalf of all at Blacks Outdoor Retail Ltd and JD Sports Fashion plc we’d like to pay tribute to Alan and thank him for having the vision and drive to create what is now a much loved favourite on the high street.
