Glastonbury and Millets Launch First Biodegradable Tent Pegs

The dangers of thousands of metal tent pegs left behind in the Glastonbury Festival fields are being countered by issuing every festival-goer with free biodegradable pegs. The eco-friendly pegs, made from natural material derived from wheat and potatoes, are being jointly launched by Glastonbury and Millets, the outdoor clothing and equipment retailer.

Over 100,000 packs of the biodegradable pegs will be distributed at this year's event, which takes place over the weekend 27-29 June. Each person with a tent will be handed a pack of ten pegs as they arrive on site. "We are really pleased to have worked together with Millets to develop a unique eco-friendly solution to the metal tent pegs that are dug up after the Glastonbury Festival," said Festival Organiser Michael Eavis. "The traditional metal pegs are harmful to our herd of dairy cows. These pegs mean we will have happy cows and support our new campaign to 'Love the Farm, Leave No Trace'." Bio-degradable Tent Pegs
Bio-degradable Tent Pegs"The emphasis has been on finding a product that will disappear into the ground without any environmental impact," said a spokesperson for Millets. "All campers will be encouraged to use their free biodegradable pegs".When the biodegradable tent pegs are left in the ground they are broken down by microbes in the soil, much like any organic matter. They start to disintegrate within a few weeks.

The pegs will be available to buy in stores and online by mid April (Product Code 990411) at £3.99 for a pack of 10, not a great cost at all to Love The Farm!
