Taking Your Dog Camping

We love our pets, especially our dogs, and want them to share happy holidays with us. Follow our simple advice to make sure everybody has fun on site - including your neighbours!

Well before leaving, check with your vet that your dog is healthy enough to travel. If you are leaving the UK, then you'll have to comply with the requirements of the Pet Travel Scheme.

You should consider having your pet micro-chipped for identification as it is all too easy to lose your dog in a new place and it will increase the chances of he or she being returned to you if found.

Take enough of your dog's medication as well as any special food or dietary needs; vet care insurance is also worth considering.

Check in advance to make sure that your pet is welcome. Don't simply ring up a site and ask, "Do you accept pets?" Be very specific "Do you accept Rottweilers?", for instance, rather than risk finding out the site really meant only small dogs.

Take some items that are familiar to your dog - a special toy, bedding, and food and water bowls. Consider a mini tent or shelter for your dog so he or she has a special space on site.

As far as you can, keep to your dog's regular routine for toilet breaks and avoid cutting back on water to reduce the need for them.

Many sites have a designated dog exercising area and most will insist you keep your dog on a lead.

Ideally, pick a site where pets are positively welcomed and catered for. If pets are allowed, check about any extra charges and specific rules that might apply.

Don't leave your dog locked in your car. If sleeping in the tent with you is a no-no, have a dog-free holiday.

Feed your dog in your tent - food left outside can attract other animals.
