Millets take 'The Walk 2009' to Glastonbury for WaterAid

Water for WaterAid - 10th May 2009

250 people came to Priddy last Sunday to take part in the Millets Walk for WaterAid, which has raised over £8,000 so far from online donations alone. It all kicked off at 10am as the groups of walkers headed towards Wells and then onwards to Worthy Farm. People turned out with their friends, family and pets to enjoy the scenic walk and to see Glastonbury in its natural state, only 7 weeks before the festival. One walker due to get married in August, Paul Haines, completed the walk with his best man as they raised money for WaterAid instead of asking for wedding presents.

Kate Vigar, Assistant Marketing Manager at Millets said; “We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The sun shone for us as we completed the 12 mile walk over stunning scenery to Worthy Farm, where Michael Eavis met and greet everyone and The Travelling Band performed a private acoustic set. As the walk got tougher towards the end, it was a good reminder of those people less fortunate than us, who have to walk miles every day to collect water. We are really pleased that we could play our part in helping to raise money for such a worthwhile cause.”

WaterAid is an international charity. Their mission is to overcome poverty by enabling the world's poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. Clean water is essential for life, but one in eight of the world's population does not have access to it. This, and lack of safe sanitation, result in over two million people dying from water-related diseases every year. Your sponsorship money will be spent wherever the need is greatest in country programmes in Africa and Asia, or in the headquarters in the UK where vital research, advocacy, communications and support functions are carried out. Because WaterAid's projects use technologies that are appropriate and affordable for people living in some of the world's poorest countries, a small amount really can make a difference to their work. For example, just £15 is enough to help one person gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. If you would like to find out more, please visit http://www.wateraid.org/uk
